“Tempora mutantur, et nos mutamur in illis”

Times Change, and we change with them” – Emperor Lothair I

Keith Hansen, MD
March 1, 2026

This saying has been attributed to Emperor Lothair I and describes the importance of adaptation to change. Lothair I was Emperor of the Carolingian Empire from 817-855 as well as King of Italy and Middle France. As we navigate this year, the SDSMA has embraced the spirit of adaptation. These changes represent our commitment to building an even stronger, more efficient organization to advocate for the physicians and patients of South Dakota.

One change is a new home for the SDSMA. Our new office is located at 1610 S Minnesota Avenue in Sioux Falls. The 3,870 square foot building offers a modern, recently renovated space for our staff and members alike. We officially moved in mid-February. The space has adequate office space for the staff, a boardroom, and extra offices for expansion.

I invite members to join us on Thursday, May 28, the evening prior to our Annual Leadership Conference, for an open house to introduce our new space. Not only is it a workspace, it offers a social and collaboration space for members. Stay tuned for invitations to roundtable breakfast discussions, Friday fun days in the summer and opportunities to use the shared space for networking events. Be sure to follow us on social media – LinkedIn and Facebook – to stay updated on activities and events.

To ensure our team can remain focused on our core mission, the SDSMA has partnered with NAI for property management services of the investment property at 2600 W 49th Street. By shifting property management duties, staff can dedicate their full energy to perform the work of the association and enhance programming for members.

Since welcoming Tammy Hatting as the new CEO in July, she has hit the ground running and has been very active with advocacy, membership recruitment, district visits, finding the new office space and much more. We also have recently welcomed Kayla Keeler as our new Membership & Executive Services Manager, who brings a fresh vision from her time at the medical school. As you know, Terry Marks retired at the end of last year after a remarkable 43-year career supporting patients, physicians and the practice of medicine in South Dakota and we wish her a happy retirement.

The new staff complement the dedicated work of Justin Ohleen, Elizabeth Reiss and Kira Gravatt. As we finalize our 2026 membership renewals, I encourage you to bring new voices into the fold. If you know a physician who isn’t yet a member, invite them to join. Together, we can ensure the SDSMA remains a powerful voice for the practice of medicine in our state.
